Steve's Cottage Pie

Winter warmer with lovely mashed potatoes and veg. This recipe can be varied to suit whatever seasonal veg you have and just about any type of mince can be used.

Sweat onion and garlic in oil in large frying pan, pot or wok, add mince and brown for 10 mins.

Add veges and soup mix, herbs, stock cube, sauces and water.

Bring to boil and then simmer for 30-60 mins uncovered until pie mix is reasonably well reduced but not sticking.

Pour into oven proof crock or casserole dish, top with mashed potato and rough surface with a fork.

Sprinkle with cheese, bake in a 180c oven for 30 mins or until potato and cheese is golden.


  • 300-500g minced meat (whatever you like, pork and veal is good!)

  • 2-4 Potatoes (500-600g), mashed and some Grated Cheese to top potato.

  • 200-300g chopped (1cm cubes) Root Vegetables (Carrot, sweet potato, beetroot etc)

  • ½ cup green peas and/or beans.  Any other green veg you like!

  • 1 large onion diced

  • 2 cloves garlic diced

  • 3 TBS Olive oil

  • ¼ cup tomato sauce

  • 2 TBS Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 packet Veg soup mix (or French onion)

  • 1 beef stock cube

  • Pinch of cracked pepper

  • 2 bay leaves plus chopped fresh herbs: Thyme, Rosemary, Sage?

  • 1 cup water
